As a Chinese alumni of the two organizations which are in the panel, Rhodium and Caixin, I do not think the Chinese guy knows well about the BRI… Bruno, on the other hand, sounds like a real expert on the BRI.

I feel that it is not entirely true China excludes US and Canada from OBOR. The often quoted mantra of Beijing officials is that OBOR is inclusive and that "bigger countries have bigger challenges to deal with" to explain their hesitance in joining OBOR. In the US, many states have strong cooperation and business ties with China. Immediately after the Trump regime pulled out of the Paris Accord, the California state representatives – the richest, most progressive and most prosperous American state – were in Beijing to affirm their commitment to reducing greenhouse emissions and to affirm cooperation in green technologies with China. In Canada, despite the arrest of Meng Wenzhou, Huawei continues to cooperate with Canadian 5G telecom industry and has skilfully recruited many former IT employees of former Canadian giant Blackberry. Chinese investors almost have no problem soliciting long term projects in oil and gas with countless aboriginal communities who chafe at being subjugated by white, European-derived colonial institutions. It simply is a matter of what defines "US" and "Canada" that is "excluded" from OBOR.

A very mature, in depth and informative discussion. It avoided almost all the dark pitfalls of China vs US dichotomy and some tendencies to demonize one side or another. On a light note, kudos to Bruno Macaes @ 1:20:09 for being a proper gentleman and pouring a glass of water for fellow academics Agatha and Zengxin and himself! A true gentleman scholar in a Confucian tradition!

The development of one belt one road can avoid competition with the US in the Western Pacific.。This is a major strategic shift for China.。Reducing dependence on maritime trade

This is the most informative BRI conversation I have seen so far, based on solid research and 1st hand experiences rather than the mainstream one-sided China debt trap BS. Thank Asia Society for sharing such a rare, sincere, honest, and objective discussion on what BRI really is. Highly recommended.

Only US and Canada.are excluded from OBOR. I understand now why US is going all their way to defame OBOR , because US.has nothing better to do.
